Ep. 24 – The Spirits and Booze Podcast

Show Notes

In this Chaotic Neutral episode, we go looking for alcohol spirits, and spend quite a bit of time in distilleries as a result. First, Nick goes on a brief tour of Scotch distilleries. Then Cait heads back stateside for a look at the ghosts haunting Buffalo Trace Distillery. Finally, “Mel!” returns to give us look at Japanese Shojo spirits WITHOUT looking at them through the lens of The CW’s Supernatural.

RECIPE: The Stone Fence

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 12 oz hard cider
  • Dash of cardamom bitters
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in a 16-20 oz glass with ice.  Garnish with fresh mint. Drink like the Founding Fathers.

You can substitute brandy or whiskey for this drink.  Cait likes it with rye, but the rum is super refreshing.  You can also use angostura bitters.

RECIPE: Kanaka Death Orgy

Shake all ingredients, except dark spiced rum,  with ice until combined and frothy. Strain into a tiki mug with fresh ice.  Top with dark spiced rum float (gentle pour to try to keep the rum together on top).  Garnish with all the fruit you can find!

Chai-Infused Whiskey

Combine 8 oz. Pendleton Whisky with 4 scoops of Blue Lotus Traditional Masala Chai in a mason jar or other air tight container.  Let set for at least a week.

You can also use 3-4 chai tea bags of your choice. Dip them briefly in hot water before adding to the whisky to get a more potent spice flavor.

Episode 15 – Death Below the 49th Parallel

Show Notes

The borders may still be closed, but Nick and Cait are taking a trip to Canada anyway. Victoria, BC is one of their favorite places, and with Victoria Day is just around the corner, it only seems right to tell stories of ghosts and murder in The Garden City. First, Cait tells us about some of the many permanent residents of the Empress Hotel, then Nick tells the story of ethereal axe-murder Kanaka Pete. Then Cait ties all the pieces together with a Canadian whiskey tiki drink that celebrates Victoria’s relationship with multiculturalism. How ya doin’, eh?

RECIPE: Spanky’s Szechuan Sazerac

Sazerac is a classic cocktail that’s been around for a very long time – we did our best to interpret the drink with authenticity.

  • .5 oz absinthe
  • 1.5 oz Rye Whiskey
  • 1.5 oz Cognac
  • .5 oz Szechuan pepper simple syrup (recipe below)
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

Rinse a chilled rocks glass with absinthe and discard extra.

In a mixing glass, combine rye, cognac, simple syrup & bitters with ice.  Stir (don’t shake!) until ingredients are combined and chilled.

Strain into absinthe rinsed glass.  Garnish with a lemon peel twist (always twist the peel over the drink).

(Yes, we used ice in the picture but we still don’t want you to have ice melting in your delicious cocktail)

Szechuan Pepper Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp Szechuan peppercorns
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns

Combine sugar and water in a sauce pan over medium heat.  Add both types of pepper (grind or crack the corns before adding to the syrup).  Simmer for 3-5 minutes.  Let cool, strain, and enjoy.  Simple syrup can safely be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 30 days.

Episode 14 – Secret Origins

Show Notes

It’s almost Mother’s Day, so we decided to bring in the woman who made it all happen, our own mother Shanna McDonald! She helps us explore the secret origins of the McDonalds’ obsession with the paranormal and help clarify some of the sketchier details. We share family paranormal encounters from three generations, including the haunted house in which Nick and Cait grew up, strange alien-like encounters in the Applegate region, and all manner of Southern Oregon weirdness! Top it off with a spicy sazerac straight from Momma’s heart, and you’ve got an episode you won’t find anywhere else!

Episode 12 – Not About Wrestling

Show Notes

It’s April Fool’s Day, and the gloves are off! Nick is coming in hot with a celebrated trickster spirit from Wisconsin, Cait preys on Nick’s fears of duende with tales of the Saci, and they both work to screw with each other where they can, as is the custom of the holiday. Cait brings in a traditional Brazilian drink fit for an evil dwarf (eventually), and we take a swing at fictional horror story podcasts (YOU know we love you!).
